Steps To Install Water Softener
Does your home need a water softener? If your dishes have water spots and your faucets, fixtures and shower heads accumulate scale, the answer is probably yes. Scale accumulations in pipes eventually restrict flow. In water heater, scaly sediment increases energy consumption and shortens tank life. Hard water also has trouble dissolving soaps.
You've researched and purchased a water softener, the next step is to learn how to install a water softener. Installing the water softener is easy and do- it- yourself project.
Shut off the water at the meter or pressure tank, and drain as much of the piping system as possible. Shut off the valve at the water heater. Turn off the power to the water heater.
Locate the dry, safe and level place to position the water softener unit. In the case of a two tank softener, position the brine and the resin tanks near one another. Now installing the water softener would require you to insert the distributor tube into the mineral tank. Flush the open end with the tank and rest the screen intake on the bottom's center point.
Cover the open end of the tube with the tape so as to prevent the outside tiny media entering into the distributor tube. Pour enough gravel slowly through a funnel into the tank to cover the screen intake. Add softener resin to fill the tank between one-half and three-quarters full, and then take the tape off the distributor tube.
Slide a rubber O-ring onto each riser stub and then install the copper riser pipes in the bypass fittings. Make sure, the o rings are fully lubricated. Tighten the riser nuts with pliers, but don't over tighten as this will damage the O-rings.
Install the bypass valve. It clips onto the valve inlet and outlet on the top of the water softener under the cover. Optionally, install a 3-valve bypass.
Open the control valve and pour about four gallon of water into the brine tank. To this brine tank, add about 40 pounds of sodium chloride (salt) or potassium chloride. Supply the water by opening the valve. Make sure, no leaks and fissures are present.
